Viikinmäki wastewater treatment plant

We organise visits to the Viikinmäki wastewater treatment plant for companies, authorities, decision-makers and journalists, as well as for organisations, associations and educational institutions (student groups of secondary school seventh graders or older) in HSY’s operating area. No visits are organised for individuals.

Considerations for visiting
• Student groups must be accompanied by a teacher, who is included in the maximum group size. The teacher is always present throughout the visit.
• It is not possible to eat your own snacks at our facilities. For this reason, the visit must be scheduled so that the students eat lunch at school.
• If you would like to have coffee served during the visit, your group is responsible for the costs.

Safety
• The maximum group size is 25 people.
• For safety reasons, student visits are organised for seventh graders or older. The groups cannot include primary school pupils or children under 12 years of age.
• The visiting site is an industrial facility. Unfortunately, it is not fully accessible. Visits are not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
• We do not recommend visiting if you are pregnant, hypersensitive to smells or have a condition that weakens the immune system.
• HSY keeps a record of the names of visitors. The identity documents (e.g. passport, ID card) are checked during the visit.

Sortti Stations

Picture of a Sortti Station

At Sortti Stations, we accept sorted small loads of waste, such as wood, construction waste and plastic, as well as domestic hazardous waste. Sortti Stations are located in Kivikko and Konala in Helsinki, Ämmässuo in Espoo, Ruskeasanta in Vantaa, and Jorvas in Kirkkonummi. Visitor groups are welcomed at the Sortti Stations in Ruskeasanta and Jorvas.

We offer opportunities for a guided visit at Sortti Stations on weekdays for
• groups from educational institutions, fifth graders or older;
• resident and association groups; and
• specialist groups.

The minimum group size is 10 people. Finnish, Swedish or English can be chosen as the language of the guided tour.

Ämmässuo eco-industrial centre

Ämmässuo eco-industrial centre

The Ämmässuo eco-industrial centre is a modern circular economy cluster that includes, among other things, an anaerobic digestion plant and composting facility for biowaste, a biogas power plant, a gas power plant utilising landfill gas, and a Sortti Station accepting small loads of waste. The ash and slag from the waste-to-energy plant can also be treated in the area. In addition to HSY, the Ämmässuo eco-industrial centre houses several companies that utilise waste materials and renewable energy generated in the area in their own operations.

We offer opportunities for a guided tour of the eco-industrial centre on weekdays for specialist groups.

Considerations for visiting
• The minimum group size is 10 people.
• Finnish, Swedish or English can be chosen as the language of the guided tour.
• The visiting hours are from 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays.
• The visitor arranges the vehicle, such as a bus, which is also used for the guided tour.
• The area of the eco-industrial centre is extensive and, for safety reasons, it is not possible to move around on foot.
