Why are water rates increasing?
At HSY, we supply drinking water to more than one million residents in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, clean urban and industrial wastewater, and we also build and renovate our facilities and water pipelines and sewer network. The water supply infrastructure is not self-sustaining and requires maintenance. The water supply is maintained and developed with water fees. On this page, we have provided answers to the most frequently asked questions concerning our water service and its need for renovation, as well as water fees.
Water pipes and sewers need extensive renovation now, and even more so in the coming decades. In addition, we must prepare for the needs of our growing cities, new weather conditions caused by climate change, and restrictive legislation.
Maintenance, renovation and construction of new pipelines are all expensive ways to solve the problem and require substantial investments. In addition to the increasing need for investments, inflation and the prevailing situation in the world will also increase water rates in the near future. The Water Management Act requires us to cover the costs of operating water services with customer fees, which means rising costs are also reflected in water rates.
