Hazardous substances and chemicals in wastewater
Many types of hazardous substances end up in wastewater from consumer products, medicines and household chemicals, and not all of them are removed by the wastewater treatment process. You can reduce the amount of hazardous substances yourself by reducing the use of chemicals and using products with an ecolabel. Return expired and unused medicines to a pharmacy and take paints, varnishes, solvents and oils to a hazardous waste collection point. If you keep excess chemicals out of the sewer network, you will reduce the chemical load of treatment plants as well as the Baltic Sea.
