Waste Information

You can sort packaging made of biodegradable plastic, such as take-away food boxes, into plastic packaging collection or mixed waste. Biodegradable plastic packaging cannot currently be used as a raw material for recycled plastic, so it can also be disposed of as mixed waste.

Biodegradable plastic bags (e.g. polylactide PLA, starch), such as the small green bags for fruit and vegetables in the grocery store, can be used as liners for biowaste containers in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Other biodegradable plastic should not be disposed of as biowaste due to its slow decomposition. Most of the bags are removed at the beginning of the biowaste treatment.

Other than packaging: Goods made of biodegradable plastic that are not plastic bags, ready meal packaging or other packaging are mixed waste.
