Authorising someone else
Private customers can authorise someone else to manage their waste services on their behalf. Rights or authorisation are also required to act on behalf of a housing company, a corporation or a business. The authorisation is carried out in the Suomi.fi service. Read more about the authorisations used in HSY’s online services.
Update authorisations in the Suomi.fi serviceMixed waste and biowaste are collected from all residential properties, except in Helsinki, where biowaste collection from properties with 1–4 apartments is starting as of 1 July 2024. Plastic, glass and carton packages as well as small metal items are collected from all properties with at least five apartments. Alternatively, biowaste can be composted on the property. Read more about biowaste collection on properties with 1–4 apartments.
Every property used as a permanent dwelling or holiday home must join organised waste management. You can also order emptying of sludge in cesspools and septic tanks from us. We are responsible for the collection and transport of waste generated in dwellings in the Helsinki metropolitan area and Kirkkonummi.
Mixed waste is always collected from municipal properties for administrative and service activities. Other types of waste must be collected separately if they are accumulated as follows: More than 10 kg/week of biowaste, more than 5 kg/week of plastic and carton packages, more than 2 kg/week of metal and glass packages.
When you don’t have a collection container for your waste
If there is no separate collection for recyclable waste in your yard, please deliver paper, carton, glass and plastic packages as well as small metal items to a Rinki ecopoint. Our Sortti recycling services help when your property’s waste collection point or the Rinki ecopoint does not have a container suitable for your waste or it does not fit in the containers.

The rental fee includes rinsing of the waste container 1–2 times a year depending on the type of waste. If the waste container becomes very dirty before its annual rinsing, you can order a replacement for a clean container subject to a charge from our customer service.
Paper collection
HSY does not collect paper. Paper producers are responsible for paper collection from housing companies. Read more about paper collection.
Composting
You can compost garden, food and toilet waste. A composting notification in accordance with the Waste Act is required when composting food and toilet waste. This applies to all properties covered by the waste management organised by HSY, including leisure properties, allotment gardens, and marinas. For the notification, you will need your waste services ID, which you can find on your waste bill.
Note: submitting a composting notification does not automatically terminate your biowaste service. If necessary, please remember to cancel biowaste collection by contacting our customer service.
