GIANT project

The GIANT (Global Trends in IAQ: Novel technologies, Competence and Business) project explores the role of different indoor and outdoor air pollution sources in terms of indoor air quality. The project focuses on indoor air quality management, adapting the WHO's latest air quality recommendations to practices and promoting the Finnish high-quality technology market. The project is carried out in cooperation with Finnish air quality researchers, pioneering companies in the field, and municipalities and cities.

New, multidisciplinary and high-quality research helps to better understand the importance of different indoor and outdoor air pollution sources for indoor air quality and the impact on human health. The GIANT project develops and promotes novel technologies and operating models for indoor air quality monitoring and exposure reduction. The cross-cutting themes of the project are outdoor environments, construction technologies, building technology and design, and indoor environments. The results also support urban planning.

The new WHO guidelines also apply to indoor air, and the monitoring of fine particles is recommended to cover new parameters, ultrafine particles and black carbon. The GIANT project extensively studies many pollutants, including particles of various sizes, black carbon, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and secondary aerosols indoors and outdoors.

The research institutes and universities involved in the GIANT project are the University of Tampere, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, the University of Helsinki and the University of Eastern Finland. Parallel business projects include Air0 Oy, Airmodus Oy, Cervi Talotekniikka Oy, Gasera Oy, Pegasor Oy, Realin Oy, Velco Oy and partners Airyn Technologies Oy, Decati Oy, Entos Oy, e-Group Oy, Halton Oy, City of Helsinki, Helsinki Region Environmental Services HSY, Inspector Sec Oy (ISEC), and the City of Tampere. The coordinator of the project is Tamlink.

The project is partly funded by Business Finland. The project started at the beginning of 2024 and will continue until the end of 2026.
