HSY and Bahir Dar Water Utility: Improving Water Services Through EU-funded Partnership Project

In 2022, HSY received funding from the EU for a three-year partnership project in water services. The EU WOP (Water Operators’ Partnership) programme aims to help water and sanitation service providers in developing countries. The programme is managed and the water utilities are supported by the Global Water Operators’ Partnerships Alliance (GWOPA), a network under the UN-Habitat.

Everyone deserves clean water

Clean water is important for human health. According to the UN, about one third of the world’s population lives without safe drinking water. Improved drinking water supply and sanitation improve the lives and position of girls and women in particular. Water is a vital part of sustainable development and an essential resource for all human activities.

In the three-year project, HSY and its partners are supporting the Bahir Dar water utility (BDWSS) in northern Ethiopia. In Bahir Dar, located on the shores of Lake Tana, the water utility is unable to produce enough safe drinking water. This affects particularly the most vulnerable people, such as children and the poor.

Basic information about the project

  • The project will be implemented during the years 2022–2025.
